3 Major Ingredients Of Energy Drinks And Their Adverse Effects

An energy drink is a type of beverage known to providing mental and physical stimulation.

Due to the wide array of ingredients in Energy Drinks, it makes them more likely to give side effects than beverages containing just caffeine alone.

Even worse, the safety of energy drinks has become a popular issue, as its consumption has increased among children and teens, which is below the regulated age limit universally.

Here are the major ingredients of energy drinks and their adverse effects:

1. Sugar

The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests that the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are;
Men: 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons).
Women: 100 calories per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).

The nutritional value for sugar in energy drinks averages at 27 grams, meaning if a person consumes two energy drinks, thats going excess and can overload and damages your liver, tricks your body into gaining weight, causing you to eat more and develop insulin resistance. It increases your uric acid levels. High uric acid levels are a risk factor for heart and kidney disease.

2. Caffeine

For healthy adults with no medical issues, generally it is suggested that 300mg - 400mg of caffeine can be consumed daily without any adverse effects.

But a can or bottle of energey drink averages on 242 milligrams per serving, so a person that consumes two energy drinks a day is at risk, with health conditions such as increasedblood pressure, increased risk of heart attack, gouts, incontinence, and possibly insomnia.

3. Sodium

The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mgs) a day and an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 mg per day for most adults .

In a can or bottle of energy drink, an average of 180 mg of sodium is used for preparation, now coupled with the other foods taken with a teaspoon of salt that has 2,300 milligrams of salt, thats already more than excess.

Here is what happens when that sodium gets too much in your system:
chest pain, trouble breathing; a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; swelling in your hands or feet; tiredness, muscle twitching; confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased or decreased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling.

These are the three major ingredients found in all energy drinks, now for the million dollar question, are energy drinks safe for consumption? That my dear readers is up to you.

NYSC Members To Plant 1 Million Trees In Kogi - NYSC

NYSC Members To Plant 1 Million Trees In Kogi - NYSC

The Kogi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Ngozi Nwatarali, on Thursday said that corps members in the state were expected to plant one million trees this year.

She said this was part of an initiative by the Federal Government of planting one million trees in the state.

Nwatarali made the disclosure at the flag-off ceremony and sensitization exercise of “Plant One Million Tree” by the 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members and “would be” volunteers at the State Orientation Camp, Asaya, Kabba.

According to her, the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the NYSC, is initiating and implementing the planting of “One Million Tree Concept”, expected to be effectively implemented by corps members in every state of the federation.

She said that the sensitization exercise was imperative due to the high rate of deforestation in the country, adding that statistics has shown that Nigeria has lost about two million hectares of her forest between 2005 and 2010.

“The programme is meant to engage and mobilize stakeholders in tree planting and maintenance culture, and the volunteer corps members are to be called ‘Tree Planting Ambassadors (TPA).

“TPAs are expected to also mobilize other corps members and the public for voluntary tree planting and also create awareness in tree planting in schools, churches, mosques, villages and communities during their service year.

“To achieve this, each corps member is expected to plant four trees in their respective places of primary assignment; then nurture these trees for the rest of their service year and give regular account.

“This will help our nation to combat deforestation and achieve afforestation as well as meeting the UN Food and Agricultural Organizations (FAO) recommended 25 per cent national tree cover,” she said.

The coordinator urged the corps members to volunteer and key into the concept that would in the final analysis make them tree planting ambassadors of their country.

Earlier, Dr Solomon Hinmikaye, Head of Horticulture, Kabba College of Agriculture, stressed the need for the volunteers to have passion for tree planting, noting that problems of erosion, global warming and increased gas emissions were caused deforestation.

“We have brought seedlings from Kabba college of agriculture to be planted by corps members to help promote afforestation and reduce the building of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

“To counter deforestation, we simply need to plant trees; massive replanting effort would help to alleviate the problems deforestation causes,” he said.

The NYSC state coordinator with corps members jointly planted some trees to flag-off the programme.

To Everyone Who’s Financially Breaking, You’ll Be Okay

I happen to be a member of Medium.com and while scrolling through my mails of stories and articles written by some talented individuals, i was chanced on seeing this post and so here i am sharing it with you;

You have what it takes.

“If people bring so much courage to this world, the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break, it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.”
― Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms

If you’re one of the very good ones, the world will break you. Not because you’ve done anything wrong, but because you’re ready to face a choice, to take responsibility for circumstances that were never your fault, to grow up. You’re ready to say, it may be messy, but I got this.

I got this.

Whether you break into a million pieces and die, or heal instead as a stronger person depends on you coming to terms with this simple thing.

Whatever you think is right today, you’ll see was wrong tomorrow. You know nothing.

Your job is to become humble again. Your job is to figure out how you’re wrong, not right, everyday and do things differently bit by bit. I know it’s the opposite of “positive thinking.”

I bought into the school of “positive thinking” and it made me a jerk. I was convinced I was right everyday for twenty years.

When I was little, I thought my dad was king. I thought I would fall in love with one person and live happily ever after.

I also had no idea that something called ‘gravity’ kept me from floating away from the earth. I thought chicken tenders were gourmet. I thought orange juice only came out of a frozen can with a sucking noise and needed to be mixed with water. I believed that our local lake, Lake Arrowhead, was the biggest lake in the United States until my friend Nick told me it was a puddle compared to the Great Lakes.

I was smart, but I knew nothing.

The good ones are ready to surrender their beliefs. The good ones are willing to say, fuck it, maybe she’s right. Maybe I don’t know why she feels the way she does, but I choose to take responsibility for figuring it out. Maybe it’s something I did. Maybe not. If you’re ready to feel stupid again, because we all are, it’s okay. You’re wearing big girl pants.

The good ones are willing to take the punch, fall down, and get back up better than ever, but never the same.

They get back up a little smarter every time.

If you’re like everyone you know, you’re barely keeping it together.

You’re driving yourself crazy, living a life of regrets. Seeing the fault in others and feeling angry that you didn’t get what you deserve. Especially in your financial life.

Let go of what went wrong yesterday. Give yourself a break. After all, you didn’t know better. Forget about tomorrow too. You don’t want to build tomorrow the same way you used to build tomorrows. Stop, and just break.

Interview Tricks Put Together To Help Nail That Job

So some graduates are through with NYSC, which means that we have new entrants into the labour market, hence the need to share this post as the search for jobs begins for them.

A job interview does not have to be tense. In fact, you may find yourself with a very friendly panel, who will go all out to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

However, irrespective of the size and manner of the panel you are faced with, what is required of you is confidence and of course, the appropriate answers to every question you are asked. This part is what’s tricky.

So, in this post, we’d be looking at the simple ways to answer 5 tricky questions you are likely to get in your job interview.

1. Tell Me About Yourself.
This question seems very straightforward. Usually, the first you’d be asked in an interview. However, it is tricky because though it sounds like an invitation to tell your life story, it is not.

When asked the ‘tell me about yourself’ question, what the hiring panel is actually asking you is to tell them about yourself, as it pertains to the position you are applying for.

With this in mind, you should not begin to share generic information about yourself, your family or how many siblings you have. Rather, you could start with your name, academic qualifications, present skills and strengths, previous experiences as well as future professional aspirations. You should also feel free to ask the interviewers for clarifications, just in case there are specific information they’d like to hear about.

Take this for instance:

Question: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Wrong Answer: Hmmn, where do I start? My name is Oluwaseun. I was born in the late 80s and currently married with 6 kids. …

Right Answer: My name is Oluwaseun, a second-year master’s student of marketing communications at the Lagos Business School. Prior to pursing this degree, I worked with the marketing and communications department at Shell, where I developed and honed my skills in copywriting and digital marketing. This experience really piqued my interest in this field and I look forward to an opportunity to learn more and contribute to your marketing communications department…

2. Where do you See Yourself in Five Years?

This question is tricky because you might be tempted to say everything you see yourself doing in five years and completely miss the mark. Like the first question, your answer should be much more professional than personal. What the hiring panel really wants to know is if you are going to stick with them and if you are worth the investment of training.

To answer this question, you could tell them how you think the job will provide you with so many opportunities, such that in 5 years, you'd be in a particular position within the organisation. You can also explain what value you hope to have added as well as how you could also have improved yourself professionally in that time.

Take this for instance:

Question: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Wrong Answer: In five years, I’d be a millionaire, enjoying life. I’d have built a house and would probably be the CEO of this company …

Right answer: In five years, I hope to have acquired a lot of knowledge in marketing communications, as well as contributed immensely to the growth of my department and the company. I’m also looking forward to eventually taking on additional managerial responsibilities and possibly taking the lead on some projects…

3. What is your Greatest Weakness?

Like the first two, this question is also very tricky because you might be tempted to give personal, instead of professional answers.
When asked this question, what interviewers actually want to know is if or not you are consciously aware of the areas you could improve on. Your weakness does not have to be present. It could be something that you’ve already worked on, but say it anyway. I’d advise that you think about this question before the interview, so you don’t give a generic answer or be at a loss of what to say.

No one would believe you if you say you have no weakness.

To answer this question, start by mentioning the weakness, how it poses a problem to your work or career and how you’ve started to work on improving.

Take this for instance:

Question: What is your greatest weakness?

Wrong answer: Hmmn, my greatest weakness is to sleep. I could sleep all day…

Right answer: I used to have to have a problem with time management and this affected me every time I tried to multitask. Currently, I’m working on this through the use of certain time management tools.

4. What did you Hate About your Last Job?

This question is tricky because you might be tempted to spill all the beans about why you hated your boss, the work, the timing - all of it! This is wrong, because the interviewers might already begin to picture you sitting elsewhere and literally dragging their name and their organisation in the mud as well.’

To answer this question, start by saying how beneficial the job was, before going to state one or two things you could have changed, if given the opportunity. Also, explain why you think the role you are now applying for is a better fit.

If you did not hate your last job, you can say so. This response can also be adapted, just in case you are asked why you are leaving your current position.

Take this for instance:

Question: What did you hate about your last job?

Wrong answer: Ooh, my boss! I hated my boss! …

Right answer: Well, my last job did offer me an opportunity to learn and grow in my career. However, I think it would have been better if such opportunity was granted in a less hostile work environment... I believe that working here would not just give me a better opportunity to grow, but also a conducive and comfortable work environment, which is very important to growth.

5. How much are you looking to be paid?

Now, this question is tricky because well, money is involved and while you don’t want to short-change yourself, you wouldn’t want to price yourself out of range either!

I know money is very important but when asked this question, don’t jump at the opportunity to scream ‘one million naira!’ Instead, you should have done your research on the organisation you are coming into and how much is standard for the role you are applying for.

If you are aware of how much the company really wants to hire you, say because of your expertise and skills, you can negotiate your salary right there. However, if this is not the case, you’ll need to fall back on the information you’ve gathered on what the going rate is, for the position you’re being interviewed for. In the worst case scenarios, you can request to know more about the role’s responsibilities and benefits packages. You should also mention how you are willing to discuss further when the time is right.

Take this for instance:

Question: How much are you looking to be paid?

Wrong answer: I can’t take anything less than ‘One million naira’!

Right answer: That's a fair question. To answer it properly, I'd need to know more about the role’s responsibilities and benefits package. I am quite confident that knowing the reputation of the company, when the time comes, any offer you make will be competitive.”

There you have it, the simple ways to answer tricky questions in your next job interview. Of course, there are quite a lot more tricky questions than I’ve listed.
