Impostor Slammed With 27 Month Jail Sentence For Job Scam

Impostor Slammed With 27 Month Jail Sentence For Job Scam

Justice O. A. Adeniyi of the FCT High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, convicted and sentenced one Micheal Ogun (a.k.a Idris Suleiman, Ibrahim Bello) to 27 months in prison on a six-count charge of forgery and obtaining by false pretence brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Ogun allegedly poses as an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and in that assumed capacity defrauding innocent Nigerians of their hard-earned money under the guise of securing them a job in the two agencies. The job scam was reported to the EFCC by one Angela Chinwe Okeke after being duped by the defendant.

In the course of the trial, Ogun changed his plea following a plea bargain agreement. At the resumed sitting today, Justice Adeniyi asked the defendant to carefully study the plea bargain arrangement and confirm if he fully understood the terms and conditions contained therein noting that, the matter was adjourned for conviction and conclusion of the trial, following chilling evidence tendered against him by the prosecution.

Responding, Ogun’s counsel, Samuel Zibiri, SAN, stated that the defendant has pleaded guilty to all counts. Referring to paragraph three of the plea bargain, Zibiri urged the court to look at the option of fine adding that the defendant is a young married man with a wife and two infants alongside his aged parents. He further stated that Ogun will restitute all his victims with veritable claims and proof of monies paid.

Justice Adeniyi, after a careful perusal of the plea bargain terms, ruled out the option of fine holding that, “the plea bargain was an afterthought coming in at the dying minute after the prosecution has proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt”.

The judge, thereafter, found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to three months each on counts one to five without an option of a fine and one year on count six. Additionally, the convict is to refund the money fraudulently collected from all his clients.

Italy Arrests Nigeria’s ‘Rambo’ For Torturing, Killing Migrants In Libya

A Nigerian human trafficker known as “ Rambo ” has been arrested in Italy on charges of torturing and killing migrants held captive in Libya , Italian police said Tuesday .

The suspect named John Ogais , 25 , was traced to a reception centre in Calabria in southern Italy and clapped in cuffs on charges of belonging to a transnational smuggling ring , specialising in human trafficking, murder and rape .

Detectives in Agrigento in Sicily have pulled together witness testimony from migrants who accuse Ogais of torturing people held captive in a makeshift prison , with at least two men reportedly dying at his hands .

Many of those rescued from flimsy dinghies in the Mediterranean as they try to make the perilous trip to Europe bear torture scars and tell rescuers they had no choice but to flee for their lives from the crisis - hit African country .

While I was inside that ghetto , where it was impossible to escape, I heard that a man who called himself Rambo had killed a migrant , ” one of the witnesses said according to the police statement.

“ My cousin and others tried to escape but they were caught and tortured nearly to death , ” the witness said .
Another said : “ Once I saw Rambo the Nigerian kill a migrant he had gagged and tortured for a long time ” , while yet another said he “ personally saw two people beaten to death , an underage boy and a man killed by Rambo ” .

– Extortion, murder –

The latter was “ killed by Rambo in front of the victim ’ s brother . When he killed the man Rambo pointed a gun at the brother and told him not to tell his family anything and to get them to immediately send money ” for their release .

Ogais was found staying at a reception centre in Isola di Capo Rizzuto , one of the largest such centres in Italy , and the scene of mass arrests last month over a mafia scandal which capitalised on asylum seekers .
Libya has long been a stepping stone for migrants seeking a better life in Europe and people smugglers have stepped up their lucrative business in the chaos which has engulfed the country since its 2011 revolution .
People rescued at sea have described harrowing ransom situations in which captors lock up migrants and demand their families send money to buy their freedom . Those who fail to comply are executed .
Reports have also emerged of ruthless traffickers burying people alive on the beaches of Libya if they refuse to board unseaworthy dinghies and overcrowded boats.

Despite the dangers, many of those arriving in Libya — fleeing conflict or poverty — find it almost impossible to get out again, if not by sea .
According to the UN ’ s International Organization for Migration , there are between 700 , 000 and one million people in Libya awaiting their chance to cross.
Over 77 , 000 people have tried to cross the Mediterranean to Europe since the beginning of the year , the UN ’ s refugee agency said Tuesday , while close to 2 , 000 people have died trying .
Abba Kyari: 'How I Arrested Evans, An Intelligent Criminal With A Very Sound IQ'

Abba Kyari: 'How I Arrested Evans, An Intelligent Criminal With A Very Sound IQ'

Funny things I did to arrest Evans, kidnap kingpin – Kyari, IRT boss

.Says I took okada to Magodo GRA to stop his escape

The Head of the Intelligence Response Team, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, has disclosed that he had to take a ride on a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as okada, to enable him move faster to the Magodo GRA Phase II residence of notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudi Onuamadike, aka Evans, to effect his arrest.

Kyari told our correspondent on the phone that to avoid any delay due to the usual chaotic traffic situation on Lagos roads, he had to quickly jump on a commercial motorcycle from his Ikeja GRA location to Magodo GRA Phase II to arrest Evans, who he had earlier been informed by his men already deployed in the area, was making frantic preparations to leave his mansion very soon.

He added that in the early hours of Sunday, “At about 1.30am, Evans and some of his gang members went out to a club around Ikeja and returned at 5.10am. So, we were very sure Sunday would be our day. So, I decided to go and cleanup myself and have a little rest before I returned to Magodo. I was still resting when my guys called that the target was set; that it appeared he wanted to go out. So, I had to take Okada from where I was, to meet up.

“You won’t believe this, but it’s the truth. Do you know that when my surveillance team alerted me of the suspect’s presence at his Magodo mansion, I had no other option than to take Okada from where I was at Ikeja GRA to Magodo?”

I INSTRUCTED MY GUYS TO GIVE HIM WARNING SHOTS; THAT WAS TO ANNOUNCE OUR PRESENCE, AND THAT KEPT HIM INDOORS UNTIL I GOT THERE AND DIRECTED THE AFFAIRS

Kyari said though it might sound funny, policemen sometimes must do “unconventional things” to get at their targets or what they actually wanted.

“I was approaching former tollgate, when I got another call that he might drive out any moment. So, I instructed my guys to give him warning shots; that was to announce our presence, and that kept him indoors until I got there and directed the affairs,” he said.

The IRT boss stated that he and his team had been on Evans’ trail for close to 10 years until the kidnap kingpin met his waterloo last Sunday.

“We have been following him, through intelligence gathering and surveillance, but we have always lost him. He is a very intelligent criminal with a very sound IQ, I must tell you,” he said.

Kyari further disclosed that he and his team mounted a surveillance on Evans five days before last Sunday, when he was finally arrested.

“When we tracked him to Lagos, I was in Abuja. The moment I was sure he was in Lagos, we moved down to Lagos on Monday of that week. We came by road and slept at a police station close to Evans’ residence and started our surveillance on him,” he said.

"How I Escaped From Evans Cell After They Concluded To Kill Me" - Pharmacist

….I ESCAPED ON THE NIGHT THEY WERE TO KILL ME

Chief Donatus (as he preferred to be identified in this heart-rending story for security reasons), is an ardent Christian who believes that God’s will must manifest, no matter the situation. A wealthy owner of one of the most flourishing pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria with outlets in major cities of the world, he was forced to pass through the eye of a needle after being abducted near his office on the celebrated lover’s day of February 14, 2017. At the end of the 90-day gruelling and shocking experience in the hands of his kidnappers led by the arrested notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudubem Omwuamadike a.k.a Evans, he miraculously escaped from their hideout. In this exclusive interview, the first since his freedom, with Emma Nnadozie and Joseph Unduu, he gave a vivid account of the hair-raising ugly encounter.

Excerpts;

On the 14th February, 2017, at about 7:30pm, while I was going home from my office at Ilupeju, I suddenly saw an SUV opposite me. I wanted to reverse but somebody in the front came down with a long gun and dragged me out from my car. He pushed me inside the SUV. Immediately they moved away from the street, they transferred me to the back of the SUV and covered me with a car mat while one of them sat on top of me. They drove me to an unknown place but before we got there, the one at the back with me now put iron (chain) on my hands. There were about five of them in the SUV. I was carried away and didn’t know what to say. I was afraid for my life and was thinking whether they were assassins or kidnappers because I have some cases in the court. So, I thought maybe those people are the ones after me.

Trip to hideout

When we got there, they asked me to come down but remain faced down, which I did. The house was a bungalow with a parlour and their generator was on. They asked me; are you Chief Donatus, I said yes, what’s your wife’s name? I told them. They now told me that they were not going to harm me, that what they wanted was their own share and that I should corporate. After that, they brought out one AK-47 and a pistol with live ammunitions and showed me that this is not a child’s play. They now brought out a locally made iron like chain and put on my legs, blindfolded me, then pushed me into one dark room. It was a self-contained room with bathroom and toilet inside. There was a standing fan, one high rise foam with bed spread and curtains on the widow but throughout my stay there, it was not opened even for one day. I was there till the following day. There was no food for me through out that night, but in the morning, they brought Indomie for me after brushing. I took my bath and ate. They asked me not to look at them any time I wanted to bath so when the time comes; I raised the blindfold up a bit, making sure that they did not see me.

Worker Kills Chinese Boss In Lagos

Worker Kills Chinese Boss In Lagos

A worker at Green World, a drug producing firm on Akinola Cole Estate, Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, Lagos State, allegedly killed his Chinese boss, Alice Xu.

It was said that the suspect, 28-year-old Okechukwu Amos, a casual worker, sneaked into Xu’s apartment while she was asleep and covered her nose with a cloth until she suffocated.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened around 8pm on Friday at the firm, which the 26-year-old Chinese woman also used as a residence.
It was gathered that the suspect had complained that the boss usually harassed him, and decided to “deal with her” that day.

Not done, Amos reportedly ransacked the apartment and allegedly stole about N800,000 and $2,000, which belonged to the deceased.

To evade arrest at the estate gate, which is manned by private guards and two policemen, Amos disguised as a mentally-derailed person.

Luck, however, ran out on him.

A security guard, who spoke to PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, said the suspect almost escaped from the gate, but he unearthed his identity and alerted one of the policemen.

He said;

“I was at the security post around 9pm that day when I saw a man half-Unclad. He walked towards the gate bare-footed. He was holding a pair of slippers and carrying a load wrapped with a shirt on his head.
“I initially took the man for a mad person, but after a closer look, I discovered that he is Ikechukwu (Amos). I asked him what was wrong and why he was dressed like that. He said he was angry and that he was quitting his job at the the company. I asked if the person that brought him to the company was aware, he said no.
“I volunteered to call the person, but he refused. I requested to know the content of the bag with him, he was reluctant.

“That was when I became suspicious and called a policeman, who was at the gate with me. He interrogated him and forced him to open the bag. The bag contained a lot of cash. He led the policeman to the company, where we found the woman dead.”

The guard said Amos was handed over to the police at the MAN Centre division.

A police source said the suspect in his statement stated that he had endured frequent harassment by the woman and decided to punish her.

The source said,

“He was employed recently by the woman through somebody and he worked at the supply department. He alleged that the woman had been very insulting and disrespecting to him over a period of time.
“He gained access into her apartment when she had slept and tied her up. He covered her mouth and nose and the woman died because she could not breathe properly. He said he only wanted to punish her and didn’t mean to kill her. Sums of N800,000 and $2,000 belonging to the woman were recovered from him.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

Nigerian hackers and cyber criminals are being accused of masterminding a grand theft of information and money running into billions of dollars, worldwide. According to experts, the Nigerians are able to carry out the heist by sending phishing emails to commercial organizations and industrial enterprises, which they later steal dry.

The FBI estimates that these phishing attacks have cost companies over $3 billion. The number of affected companies exceeds 22,143. Kaspersky Labs, an internet security company said it has found over 500 companies that are under attack in at least 50 countries. Those under attack are mostly industrial enterprises and large transportation and logistics corporations, based in Germany, UAE, Russia and India.

In a blog post, Kaspersky said the cyber-criminals managed to steal technical drawings, floor plans and diagrams showing the structure of electrical and information networks. Researchers said that all indications are that these were business email compromise (BEC) attacks that have come to be associated with Nigerian cyber-criminals. Emails received by victims looked authentic enough to fool people.

Some had attachments with names such as “Energy & Industrial Solutions W.L.L_pdf”, “Woodeck Specifications best Prices Quote.uue” and “Saudi Aramco Quotation Request for October 2016”. These are well crafted emails that look legitimate and are crafted to make the victim open the malicious attachment. The emails ask the recipients to check information as soon as possible, clarify product pricing or receive goods specified in the delivery note attached. The malicious attachments contain RTF files with an exploit for the CVE-2015-1641 vulnerability. They may also contain archives of different formats containing malicious executable files or macros and OLE objects designed to download malicious executable files.

Kaspersky discovered that the malicious files are intended to steal confidential data and install stealthy remote administration tools on infected systems. Using Whois services, Kaspersky found that the domains used to host the malware were registered to residents of Nigeria. Once in, the hackers compromise a legitimate email and change the banking account details. The malware used in these attacks belonged to families that are popular among cyber-criminals, such as ZeuS, Pony/FareIT, LokiBot, Luminosity RAT, NetWire RAT, HawkEye, ISR Stealer and iSpy keylogger. ”The phishers selected a toolset that included the functionality they needed, choosing from malware available on cyber-criminal forums.

At the same time, the malware was packed using VB and .NET packers – a distinct feature of this campaign. To evade detection by security tools, the malicious files were regularly repacked using new modifications of the same packers,” said the researchers. At least eight different Trojan-Spy and Backdoor families were used in the attacks.

Further research found that the domain names of some of the malware command-and-control servers used by the attackers mimicked domain names used by industrial companies – “more proof that the attacks were primarily targeting industrial companies,” said researchers. They added that most domains used for malware C&C servers were registered to residents of Nigeria. Researchers warned that it would be very dangerous if, because of an infection, cyber-criminals were able to gain access to computers that are part of an industrial control system (ICS).

“In such cases, they can gain remote access to the ICS and unauthorised control over industrial processes,” said researchers. Owen Connolly, vice president services (EMEA) at IOActive, told SC Media UK that this attack is not actually targeting industrial control systems or operational technology. “It’s just targeting users that work for large companies. The fact that those companies may also have OT systems could just be coincidence, not correlation,” he said. Mark James, security specialist at ESET, told SC Media UK that scammers are opportunistic.

They understand they need to adapt and will change their tactics to get the best result. “With the 419 scams being so synonymous with the public, the scope for business users being victims is massive. We also need to consider the scope for larger, single successful attacks reaping the benefits much quicker than the smaller, and often much harder, sells through the public,” he said.

Javvad Malik, security advocate at AlienVault, told SC that organisations dealing with industrial control systems may not be as savvy to scams as financial services, so it could be that the success rate of targeted emails is higher. “Allowing criminals to make quick money. On the other hand, it could allow criminals to implant malware on industrial control systems, or at least on systems that support the ICS. This can then be allowed for further nefarious purposes such as deploying ransomware – or selling on the access to other criminals or ever nation states,” he said.

‎Notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, AKA Evans, who was arrested recently by the police for coordinating several high profile kidnappings and armed robberies within Lagos, Anambara and Enugu State, receiving millions of dollars as ransom, Sunday took police operative to two houses (Dens) in Ejigbo and Igando areas in Lagos state, where he kept some of his victim for months.

Evans: I Gave My Father N3m, SUV And A Hilux Van; Why I Didn't Enjoy My Money

Evans: I Gave My Father N3m, SUV And A Hilux Van; Why I Didn't Enjoy My Money

Suspected kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeje George Onwuamadike alias Evans, yesterday claimed he gave his father N3million cash, a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a Hilux Van before he stopped visiting his hometown, Umudim, Nnewi in Anambra State.

Evans made the allegation when detectives took him to one of the dens his gang used for the detention of victims.

The bungalow situated at Green Street, Jakande Estate, Isolo, was rented by the kingpin, through his gang members in 2010 and he paid the rent yearly.

The other two are situated at New Igando and Gowon Estate, the suspect said.

Evans, who said he believed his father must have started the pig husbandry from the money he gave him, blamed the man for what he turned into.

He said: “Before I stopped going home, I gave my father N3million and I bought him jeep and pick up van. I believe that part of the money I gave him was what he used to establish the piggery business. Had it been my father had taken good care of me, I wouldn’t have become what I am today.

“I dropped out of school at JSS2, when my father refused to send me to school. I have been fending for myself since I was 10 with the support of my mother, presently my mother is paralyzed. She’s on sick bed.

“My wife was only lying that she did not spend part of my money. She only wants Nigerians to have sympathy for me. She did not know I was into kidnapping. I only told her that I am into drug, which she advised me to stop because it is dangerous.”

Continuing, Evans, who allegedly threatened his victims with death and even shot at some of them, said he believes in God.

He said: “I believe in God, that was why I mandated my wife to always wake my children up for prayers. My favourite bible passage is Psalm 23. My wife does not know why I loved the Psalm so much. I loved it because of the sins I have committed. I always asked my children to ask for forgiveness for me and also pray that I should not die young.

“I believe in God, because he’s the only one that can save me from the problem I find myself in. I believe it was greed that pushed me into kidnapping. I don’t believe in Juju.”

Although detectives said Evans held Chief James Udoji and five other victims hostage in the Jakande camp until their families paid demanded ransom, Evans said he only had three victims inside the building.

He said: “I have just three camps in Lagos where I kept some of the victims, I kidnapped, and the camps are in Jakande, Igando and Gowon area of the state.

“I collected $1million from Udoji. Another victim Emesbos paid me $300,000, while the third person paid N250,000. Whenever I noticed policemen were after me, I moved the victim to a different camp so that I won’t be tracked.

“I rented the Jakande house for N750,000 per annum. I also operated several bank accounts, but I used GTB constantly.

“The house at Igando has two different apartments. I rented the house for N1million per year. I only kept two victims in the house and they are Chief Umeh and the pharmacist, Chief Donatus Dunu, who escaped.

“We collected €23million (euros) from the family. We demanded €300million before they paid €23million and promised to bring the rest. When we collected the money, I told my boys to release the man, they were the ones holding him, because then, I was suspecting policemen were after me.

“I was surprised when I heard that Chief Donatus Dunu has escaped from the detention camp. It was one of my boys that called and informed me about the development. I was still not convinced that Uche and Emeka did not collect money from the victim’s family and released him.

“It was after two weeks that I received a call from my spy in the community that policemen had busted the house and recovered arms and ammunitions.

“I usually don’t go to the house. I have my boys on ground there and they give me information about the development on daily basis. That alone gives me the assurance that all was well with any victim we kidnapped.

“When I heard that the Igando house has been busted by the police, I threatened the camp officer Uche Amadi that I was going to kill him. I just wanted to get the truth about the escape of the pharmacist from him.

“I always controlled my boys on the phone. Most of the detention camps, I asked them to do the findings and get back to me. I usually gave them specification on the houses to look for and I only went to the place after they must have inspected. I don’t just rent any house, anywhere based on what we were using them for.”

Asked how he was faring in cell, Evans said he was being treated well by other suspects, adding that policemen were also friendly with him.

“They take good care of me. I cannot blame them if they did not take care of me because I am the cause of my problem. I am reaping what I sowed.

“I do not have any car called Fathom. The only vehicles I have are Toyota Hilux, Nissan pickup – N7million, Luxus GS460 – N22million, Range Rover, 2016 model – N55million and Luxus GL47 – N9million.

“I did not enjoy all the money I made from kidnapping because I was always on the run. I am regretting my actions in life. I did not go to clubs, hotels because I was afraid that policemen would come after me. If I am given a second chance, I would be the most grateful person on earth and I promise to be an advocate of anti-kidnapping in the country.”

Speaking with SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity, a family member of the freed Registrar disclosed that the kidnappers had initially demanded a ransom of N30 million, adding that they reduced the amount to N20 million and finally to N5 million, which was paid to secure the registrar's release. The source said he suspected the registrar's abduction was connected to the polytechnic's recent sacking of 200 employees.

Confirming the release of the registrar, a senior lecturer at the Polytechnic told our correspondent that he and some staff of the institution believe the kidnappers came from among the more than 200 employees laid off by the Polytechnic. According to the lecturer, many of the sacked employees had in 2015 paid the registrar bribes of between N150, 000 and N200, 000 in order to secure employment at the institution. Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State recently dismissed many of those employees.

"The truth is that these persons spent fortunes to secure their appointments. And they paid the huge sums to the registrar, Collins Onyenwenu, during the administration of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. All the employees were duly issued employment letters and went through the biometrics screening in Asaba. All of a sudden, when Governor Ifeanyi Okowa assumed office, the appointments were invalidated on the grounds that the workers did not go through the normal process."

The lecturer added: "A day after the registrar was kidnapped, at night the kidnappers went to the residence in Ogwashi-Uku of the registrar's cousin, named Collins. Collins was not at home. The kidnappers left a message with his wife to pass on to him. They said the registrar should refund all the money he collected in exchange for facilitating their failed employment. They threatened to kill him [the registrar] if he failed to comply."

The lecturer alleged that the registrar used Collins and another cousin named Henry as fronts to collect bribes from job seekers, adding that Henry reportedly left Nigeria once the employments were terminated.

Speaking to SaharaReporters Thursday, the freed registrar said his kidnap had nothing to do with employment issues at the Polytechnic, adding that those who kidnapped him were Fulani herdsmen.

On the reported N5 million ransom, the registrar insisted he did not pay any ransom to his kidnappers.

“I was kidnapped at Ugiliamai along Iselegu-Utagba Uno-Obiaruku Road and taken to Ossisa where I was released," he said. The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, stated that no arrests had been made so far, adding that the investigation was continuing.

Ngozi Olojeme Declared Wanted By EFCC Over $48m Fraud

Ngozi Olojeme Declared Wanted By EFCC Over $48m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has obtained a court order to declare wanted Dr. Ngozi Olojeme, the Deputy Chairman, Finance Committee of the Goodluck Jonathan Presidential Campaign Organisation in 2015.

Olojeme, who served as the Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund from 2009 to 2015, was accused of diverting $48,485,127 from the NSITF.

The NSITF is a social insurance scheme designed to provide compensation to employees who suffer from occupational accidents or diseases in the line of duty. The organisation is funded by deducting 1 per cent from all government and private sector employees enrolled in the scheme.

However, according to documents made available to The PUNCH, Olojeme and some directors in the company allegedly diverted billions of naira including funds meant for the payment of allowances of its staff as well as compensation to contributors.

Trouble started for Olojeme shortly after her removal by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

The EFCC subsequently received a petition alleging that over N50bn from the Employee Compensation Scheme fund, paid by Ministries, Departments and Agencies and private companies as well as another N18bn, being the contribution of the Federal Government as take-off grant to the NSITF, was mismanaged and diverted into the personal accounts of Olojeme and Umar Abubakar, a former Managing Director of the NSITF.

The EFCC immediately set up a team of detectives to look into the allegations.

Operatives of the commission looked into the bank account of the NSITF and uncovered suspicious transactions and diversion of funds.

Some funds were said to have been traced to the accounts of some consultants and contractors, who were believed to be fronts for Olojeme and other directors in the NSITF.

It was learnt that several directors and contractors were invited to explain their own side of the story, many of whom have since returned funds to the EFCC.

Joy Odama: Alhaji Usman Adamu, The Prime Suspect In Her Death Appears

Joy Odama: Alhaji Usman Adamu, The Prime Suspect In Her Death Appears

Police investigations into the suspected murder of Joy Odama, a 200-Level undergraduate of Mass Communication of Cross River State University, in Abuja, took a new twist, yesterday, as the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, through the IGP Monitoring Unit, ordered that a fresh autopsy be carried out to confirm the cause of her death.

The IGP’s directive, it was gathered, followed the re-appearance of Alhaji Usman Adamu, who Vanguard gathered made a statement, stating his part of what transpired, noting that he was never on the run.

Recall that the initial autopsy report from the National Hospital, Abuja, indicated that Joy Odama died of cocaine poisoning occasioned by cardiogenic shock secondary to diffusion.

The report said: “The cause of death was traced to cardiogenic myocardial infection secondary to possible acute cocaine poison.”

However, lawyer to the family of the deceased, Rose Mbata, and representatives of Yala community in Abuja, disclosed that at a meeting summoned by the Inspector General of Police at Force Headquarters, yesterday, with family members of late Joy Odama, and interested parties, Deputy Commissioner in charge IGP Monitoring Unit delivered the IGP’s order.

Surprise appearance

Mbata said: “On arrival at Force headquarters, the Inspector General instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of the IGP Monitoring to conduct preliminary hearing on the matter and revert to him.

“In the cause of the preliminary hearing, surprisingly the prime suspect in the case, Alhaji Usman Adamu, who the police had said was at large, suddenly appeared at the meeting room in company of some policemen.

“With a stern and fiery look on his face, he exchanged pleasantries with the police and took his seat. At the end of the hearing, all parties were now taken to see the IGP, who was not on seat.

Fresh autopsy

“The parties were informed by the DCP that on the instructions of the IGP, a fresh autopsy shall be conducted.

“Parties were requested to report tomorrow (today) by 7a.m. at the National Hospital, Abuja, for a fresh autopsy to be conducted where other consultant pathologists shall participate in the exercise.

“The DCP Monitoring later informed us that the Nigeria Police shall bear the cost of the fresh autopsy contrary to the Police earlier refusal to foot the bill.”

The family of the deceased, however, expressed shock that the senior officers indicted in the saga including the then DPO, Karmo Police Division, were absent at the meeting.

Roll call

Parties present at the meeting include the deceased’s mother, Mrs Philomena Odama; Lead Counsel, Lady Rose Mbata & Co; Yala Community, Abuja, represented by Godwin Offiono (Esq.); the family, represented by Godwin Okuja (Esq.); Augustine Okechukwu of Basic Rights Enlightenment Foundation; other witnesses, including the cook, Ms Victoria, and Elizabeth, who took the late Joy Odama to Alhaji Usman Adamu.

Repeated calls to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood, to ascertain why the initial autopsy was being questioned, were not answered.
