He had gone, walking up slowly down into the lane, leaving her a prey to a whole lot of feelings. Flora spent the rest of the day staying indoors with the excuse that her grandmother's sofa covers in the sitting room needs to be washed and ironed and today is the day she wants to do them. The next morning she was upstairs when doctor Dave called; she had peeped out through the window to see who was there at the door and had almost fallen over in her hurry to for her head back in again in case he would look up. Which he didn't, Flora stood still behind the curtains, telling herself that she didn't want to see him again.
When she later went downstairs, her grandmother said that she had not wanted to bother her because he only come to say goodbye and had said that he had already said goodbye to her after their walk at the bitch. Just fancy, her grandmother breathed to no one in particular. He is going back to bedford this night, after Bedford he leaves for Holland, he would have to visit his house keeper in St Nicholas hospital. And that said Flora silently, is a good thing too. It was probably the relief of knowing that she will not meet him again, the thought of this gave her a curious sensation of emptiness, as if she had lost something. But she had actually not lost anything, when she went back on duty the next day and two nights later, he was there in St. Nicholas hospital, chatting with sister Cynthia, a nurse in the hospital. Becky gave him an austere good evening and waited patiently at the desk. Becky was amazed at the way sister Cynthia was all smiles while doctor Dave was chatting her up. Flora became so carried away with her thoughts when he said, Flora i hope you left your grandparents well. She Blushed, calling her Flora in front of senior staff nurse Cynthia. They are perfectly well indeed, Thank you, She said. He gave her the tiniest of smiles and turned back to nurse Cynthia. Well i wont keep you from your work, Nurse Cynthia, Goodnight and many thanks. You have been more than kind, He smiled at her. He then turned to Becky, looked at with smiles, then allowed the smile turn into mocking, And goodnight to you, junior staff Nurse. It was Nurse Cynthia who answered him while he went away. Flora didn't have any word for him at all. I had no idea that you were in friendly terms with Doctor Dave. Nurse Cynthia said.
